The Ministry for Grand Bahama

 

The Ministry for Grand Bahama was established on May 14, 2012 to specifically cater to the affairs of the residents of Grand Bahama. The office is located in the Harold De’Gregory Complex (which is the former Office of the Prime Minister) on south mall drive in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The Honourable Dr. Michael Darville, M.P. for the Pineridge Constituency is the Minister for Grand Bahama.  Mr. Melvin Seymour is the Acting Permanent Secretary.

 

The purpose of this Ministry is:

To bridge the gap between all the associated government ministries on the island and its stakeholders, in order to bring the synergy and organization required to change the direction in which Grand Bahama was headed; and to deliver the relief needed by residents from East to West Grand Bahama to restore prosperity. 

 

The Government of The Bahamas has assigned a number of important mandates to the Ministry for Grand Bahama which include but are not limited to:

  • Advancing government relations with the Grand Bahama Port Authority;
  • The extension of duty free concessions to East and West Grand Bahama;
  • The Promotion of Agricultural development in Grand Bahama;
  • Social Services for Grand Bahama;
  • Environmental Protection for Grand Bahama;
  • The Revitalization and promotion of Grand Bahama as a Tourism and Industrial Centre;
  • The promotion of employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in Grand Bahama;
  • Advancement of Health and Educational Infrastructure in liaison with the relevant ministries;
  • Operation Flush/Urban Development;
  • Community Relocation  of residents of Pinder’s Point, Lewis Yard, Hunters and Mack Town; and
  • Training and retraining the work force on Grand Bahama.
