As the Government’s technical focal point for GIS is in The Bahamas, it is the remit of The Bahamas National Geographic Information Systems (BNGIS) Centre to develop a training program for government agencies. As such, training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is offered.
GIS training for government agencies may be conducted by international specialists, the BNGIS Centre and strategic partners with GIS expertise or training conducted by ESRI Authorized instructors. Training includes various modules including background lectures as well as GIS Field exercise to reinforce data collection techniques and allow GIS students to get hands on operations of the GIS hand held units. Training also includes a compact GPS processing and downloading to GIS session.
Agencies requesting training of persons not employed by Government will be responsible for conducting Training and may apply for use of the Training facility only.
The GIS training plays an essential role in equipping Public Service officials with modern tools to support business operations including, but not limited to, asset and fleet management, vehicular tracking for security services, urban planning and recording existing land use, topographic mapping, detail criminal activities and much more. Its use is especially beneficial to the collection of data in far flung areas of The Bahamas that will lead to the better management, inventory of roads, utilities, marine resources and matters of the environment at large.
Government agencies, public and private schools attached to the BNGIS GI Education initiative. A minimum of 8 persons and maximum of ten persons are required for approved training sessions that are conducted by The Centre. Selected participants must be computer literate, must be assigned by requesting agency to apply GIS expertises in the organization’s work flow processes and must have access to GIS software and computer system in their office.
Two seats of any training that is not conducted by the Centre must be reserved for the BNGIS Centre Technical staff, should the training be of use to the Centre.
Training conducted by the Centre is free of charge. However agencies are required to provide printer ink, binding and paper supplies for preparation of training materials. In the case of training by ESRI Authorized Training a fee will be charged and the agency informed of charges.
