Remand Court

The Ministry of National Security has been instrumental in the Government’s establishment of a Remand Court as it seeks to expeditiously conduct the hearings of offenders who are on Remand at Her Majesty’s Prison; thereby, helping to alleviate the overcrowding at the Prison, particularly for minor offences.

Currently offenders are transported downtown on a daily basis from the Prison to attend court, and this presents disruption, security and safety concerns. Additionally, there has been concerns raised by Prison staff and members of the public concerning incidences occurring during the transportation of the prisoners. A Remand Court, away from the down town area was seen as a viable solution to this problem.

The establishment of the Remand Court required the identification of facilities suitable for the purpose.  The court has, therefore, been established in facilities in close proximity to Her Majesty’s Prison, Fox Hill.
