The role and function of the Special Security Service (SSS) is to provide The Department of Correctional Services with effective and efficient security services. This includes the K9 division, tactical escort, perimeter patrols and protection, security training, firing range development and Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Some of the primary functions of the SSS team are to provide special security for high profile inmates being escorted to and from court, hospital and funeral homes. The unit is also responsible for coordinating and conducting special searches of all housing units, the prison compound, and assist with the apprehension of escapees.

Other duties and responsibilities include handling cell extractions, addressing riots and major disturbances and facilitating training for all officers of The Department of Correctional Services with a view to ensuring that all established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are adhered to, keeping in mind that safety is a prominent factor.

During the year 2013, officers attached to the SSS Unit conducted numerous in-housing training that afforded them the opportunity to keep abreast of current trends as it relates to incarceration, rehabilitation and security process.
