A sealant is a form of preventative dental care traditionally used on school aged children. It is a thin, resin material that is bonded into the pits and fissures of the back teeth to prevent decay. Sealants are a safe and painless way of protecting back teeth. The hard shield prevents food and bacteria from wedging into the grooves of the teeth which can in turn cause tooth decay. This should be done as soon as the teeth erupt from the gums. Please note that the procedure is a painless one, and that the teeth feel normal once sealed.
Anyone can access this type of dental healthcare. Please note that a General Oral Exam must be carried out prior to having dental sealants applied.

- The tooth is cleaned and prepared with a special solution, then dried.
- Liquid sealant is then applied and an ultraviolet light is placed onto the surface, causing the sealant to harden.
- Once the sealant has “set” or hardened, the tooth is considered protected. The sealant can last for years, but it is recommended that you visit the dentist at your local Community Health Clinic regularly to ensure that the seal remains intact.
