The Bahamas National Geographic Information Systems (BNGIS) Centre in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Finance requested an automated solution that would efficiently deliver/serve up GIS related applications and data from a centralized system known as The Bahamas Spatial Data Infrastructure (BSDI). Spatial Data Infrastructure has sound business justification and is a technology that most countries have or are in the process of developing at national and/or regional/local levels. The Centre's existing BSDI technology includes a BSDI database server, BSDI Application Server and two existing servers to support core BSDI Technology and is founded on an ESRI Client-Server application model. Citrix offered to demonstrate a cost effective solution to improve efficiencies and GIS operations throughout the Civil Service.
IDENTIFIED NEEDS
DELIVERABLES
Give Government Departments, Agencies and selected schools fast and easy access to GIS applications on demand, from a centralized Data Center.
Ensure that all remote connections are secure
Simplification in the administration of applications so as to improve the BNGIS Centre and DIT Department’s ability to provide support, software upgrades and network management in a cost effective manner
Deliver applications with maximum up-time and performance.
Provide consistent end user experience to all applications.
Provide a solution that is scalable and can be easily expanded to include additional applications and users.
Provide users access to their information over Internet or GWAN connections.
Ensure conformity to ESRI License Agreement for the use of ESRI Software suite within a Citrix environment
Provide interface with the BNGIS Centre’s website
Provide a link/tie into the BNGIS Centre’s website (Government website for Pilot) to allow access to GIS mapping applications and data
In order to demonstrate the above mentioned benefits a test pilot was performed using pre-defined methodology and established best practices. The result of the test pilot was the implementation of the Citrix XenApp lab, which allowed us to demonstrate the functionality of the applications in a Citrix environment as well as demonstrate the achievement of all the goals set forth in this document and also make any technical and /or strategic recommendations.
