The Rental programme offers assistance to Bahamian citizens who face economic challenges and are unable to manage a mortgage. The service is also in place to assist Bahamian citizens in their quest to the next level of home ownership via government’s affordable housing programme.
The Rental programme offers access to rental units for a period of three years; this rental agreement may be renewable for one additional year at a time.
Bahamian citizens and permanent residents who are 18 years of age or older. There is also an arrangement for senior citizens 65 years or older and independent.
- Fill out the application form and submit it in persons at the New Providence and Family islands Offices as these service are offered in New Providence, Grand Bahama, Exuma and Andros.
- Once all requirements are satisfied, and based on availability of units, the applicant is contacted for a second interview and contract signing.
- At the second interview the Housing Officer will review the rental agreement with the applicant.
- At this stage the Applicant first month’s rent must be paid prior to occupancy. Once this is paid and the contract is signed, the keys are turned over to the applicant.
- Once keys are turned over, the tenant is responsible for the upkeep of the interior of the apartment and payment of all utility charges thereafter.
- The monthly rental charge is due and payable at the beginning of each month thereafter. Failure to pay may result in eviction.
The relevant forms are completed by the Housing Officer during the interview.
- Proof of Bahamian citizenship (Passport/Certificate of Identity)
- Current National Insurance Card
- Verification of Income (not more than three months old)
- Recent Pay Slip
- A Job Letter
- A Social History Report with recommendation from the Department of Social Services
Rental Units are assigned based on availability.
There is no deadline associated with this service.
There are no fees associated with this service. However, the first month’s rent is required at contract signing.
