Review of Housing Initiatives

Over the past four years, the Ministry of Housing  repaired approximately  600 houses throughout New Providence and Grand Bahama, and completed the construction of  470 houses. An additional 96 houses were under construction  in New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco, as at 17th November, 2011.  A Parliamentary resolution was passed for the vesting of land title in the Ministry of Housing with respect to Pride Estates 3, east of Fire Trail Rd., Ardastra Estates in Perpall Tract, and for land in Spring City, Abaco. Crown Grants were also received for lands in Exuma and Mangrove Cay, Andros.

These initiatives permitted many Bahamian families to receive titles to land, which they were occupying or had made arrangements to purchase. Additionally, the Department facilitated the completion of houses in Exuma, and infrastructure was installed to permit house construction on the islands of New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco, and Andros. A strategic plan was also prepared to facilitate the development of subdivisions and house construction on New Providence, Grand Bahama, Bimini, Eleuthera, Cat Island, Long Island, and Exuma.

Future Plans

The Ministry of Housing will establish a new 307 lot subdivision on a 70 acre parcel of land in south New Providence, to be called “Carmichael Village”. This Subdivision will be comprised of residential and commercial lots, parks, kiddie playgrounds, and walking trails. Additionally, a neighbourhood government school will complement the subdivision. The Ministry will also complete the installation of roads and drainage in Ardastra Estates, and will continue its programme to regularize title for persons occupying land in Dignity Gardens II, Pride Estates III, and on land formerly owned by the Leonard Sugarman Estate in Fox Hill.

In Grand Bahama, construction will continue in Sunset, Frobisher, Wellington Pinder Heights, Pine Forest, West Heights, and in the Heritage subdivisions. Lots sales will also be recommenced in the McCleans Town and High Rock communities.

In Abaco, the Department will continue with the construction of houses in Spring City, and lot sales will continue in Crossing Rock, Crown Haven, Coopers Town, Sands Cove, and in Central Pines, in collaboration with the Bahamas Mortgage Corporation. The Abaco office will also be actively involved with lot sales in Murphy Town, Treasure Cay and Green Turtle Cay.

Elsewhere in the family islands, infrastructure will be installed in Eleuthera to facilitate additional lot sales in the Hatchet Bay Subdivision, and houses will be constructed in Exuma and in San Salvador.
