One third of the world’s population, over two billion people, are Commonwealth citizens. The voluntary association of 53 independent and equal nations include some of the world’s largest, smallest, richest and poorest countries, spanning five regions. Thirty-one of its members are small states, many of them island nations.

The Commonwealth Secretariat is the association’s central institution, encouraging and enabling co-operation between members and assisting and advising on policy.

With over 60% of the Commonwealth population under the age of 30 and a quarter under five, education is a priority for its members.
