Government

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, through the Department of Sports, offers assistance to developing, intermediate, and elite athletes to assist with the development of sport. As an athlete progresses, the status is changed from developing to intermediate, and finally to elite status.  It is the responsibility of the federation to supply the department with information regarding the development and progress of the employee.  Any assistance received is directly related to the established status of the athlete.

Eligibility

Any athlete who is a Bahamian citizen or resident is eligible.

Process
  1. The Sporting Federation must submit all requests for assistance to the Department of Sports.  The requests may include a list of names and the status (developing, intermediate, elite) of the athlete.
  2. The Department of Sports will send a letter to the federation acknowledging receipt of the request for assistance.
  3. The Ministry will then review the list of athletes.  During the review, the Ministry may liaise with the federation to get additional information and to verify that the athletes are in compliance with the Sports Policy.
  4. The federation is informed of approval or non-approval in writing.
  5. Once assistance is approved, the federation must collect the cheque on behalf of developing and intermediate athletes at the Department of Sports and distribute them to relevant athlete.
  6. Assistance funds for elite athletes are deposited directly to their accounts.

Note:  Assistance is allocated based on availability of funds.
